This piece was part of an exhibition themed “Five Billion Years.”

The show’s concept was to reflect on the evolution of life since the Cambrian explosion — around 541 million years ago — and to explore transformations in human history and art through that immense timescale.

But honestly, the theme felt so vast that some works seemed rather forced — with unclear or tenuous connections to the concept.

Amidst all this, the Swiss artist Urs Fischer’s Untitled (Branches) stood out as a work of striking elegance and presence.

Fusing primal materials with a subtle contemporary mechanism, the piece was captivating to encounter. Two branches hung from chains suspended from the ceiling, each tipped with a small burning candle.

As the candles slowly rotated, wax dripped steadily onto the floor below.

At first glance, the work appeared simple — but the chains were subtly motor-driven, causing the branches to move in delicate, balanced arcs, tracing circles on the floor.

The combination of raw, organic material with a modern, controlled motion created a quietly ambivalent, haunting atmosphere — which left a strong impression on me.

この作品は、「Five Billion Years」というテーマでキュレーションされた展覧会に出展されていた。ちなみにこの展覧会のテーマは──5億4100万年前に起きたカンブリア爆発から始まった生物多様化の過程を現代まで捉え、人類の歴史や芸術の変容について考察する──というものだった。

だが正直なところ、テーマのスケールが大きすぎたせいか、こじつけのように感じられたり、関連性が腑に落ちない作品もちらほら見受けられた。

そんな会場の中で、センスあふれる作品でひときわ光っていたのが、スイス人アーティスト、ウルス・フィッシャーの Untitled (Branches)。

原始的な要素と現代的な仕掛けを融合させ、しっかりと見応えのあるこの作品。──二本の枝が天井から吊るされたチェーンに下がっており、その枝先には小さな灯りのついたキャンドルが取り付けられている。

そのキャンドルはゆっくりと回転しながら蝋を床に垂らし続けている。一見するとシンプルな作品だが、天井から吊るしているチェーンにはモーターが仕込まれており、枝が左右の微妙なバランスを保ちながら、床に円を描き続ける。

原始的な素材感がモダンな仕掛けと交わり、アンビバレントで趣のある雰囲気を漂わせている──そんなところに惹かれた作品だった。
