Internationally renowned since 1967 for his album cover design for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles, Peter Blake has long been hailed as “the godfather of British Pop Art.”

It was wonderful to see that — now aged 90 — he remains active and continues to create new work.

At Waddington Custot Gallery, the show presented several series of new works along different themes.

The one that left the strongest impression on me was “Holiday Series: Time Traveller” — an affectionate homage to the great collage artist Joseph Cornell, from whom Blake drew deep inspiration.

Blake, whose strongest works have always been collages — rather than paintings — conceived this playful idea: to “send Cornell, who admired European culture but never travelled outside America, on a holiday through time and space via collage.”

A witty and charming tribute.

The show also featured fun, kitschy objects celebrating icons of pop culture — Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Brigitte Bardot, and others.

Overall, it was a much more engaging and satisfying exhibition than I had expected.

1967年にビートルズのアルバム『サージェント・ペパーズ・ロンリー・ハーツ・クラブ・バンド』のジャケットデザインで世界的に知られ、「英国ポップアートのゴッドファーザー」と称されるブレイク。

素晴らしいことに、90歳を迎えた今もなお、制作を続けている。

ワディントン・クストー・ギャラリーでは、いくつかのテーマに沿って制作された新作が展示されていた。

特に印象に残ったのは、ブレイクが大きな影響を受けたコラージュ作家ジョセフ・コーネルへのオマージュ──「休暇シリーズ：タイム・トラベラー」。

ペインティング以上に、多彩な素材を組み合わせたコラージュで本領を発揮するブレイク。

ヨーロッパ文化と歴史に憧れながらも、生涯一度もアメリカ国外に出なかったコーネルを、「コラージュという方法で時空を超えたホリデーに連れ出す」というウィットあふれるテーマがとても魅力的だった。

そのほかにも、マリリン・モンロー、エルヴィス・プレスリー、ブリジット・バルドーといったポピュラーカルチャーの象徴的存在をモチーフにしたオブジェも、ポップでキッチュ。

思った以上に見応えのある展示だった。
