This work is part of a series created by Isa Genzken in direct response to the September 11 attacks — an event she experienced firsthand, stranded in Manhattan amid the chaos and fear. The series was developed over two years, from 2002 onward.

In this particular piece, kitschy, brightly-coloured artificial flowers — the kind you might find at a discount shop — are piled together with toy soldiers, mechanical parts, and warped sheets of metal, all teetering as if ready to spill from the base frame.

Though modest in scale, the work powerfully condenses the destructive force of the attacks — and the overwhelming chaos they unleashed.

It also marks a visible turning point in Genzken’s practice: after years of working in a structuralist and minimalist mode through the 1990s, this piece shows her breaking away from those tendencies and beginning to search for her own, highly individual approach.

アメリカ同時多発テロ（September 11 attacks）後、マンハッタンで足止めされ、実際に大混乱と恐怖を体感したゲンツケンによるレスポンス・シリーズのひとつ。2002年から2年間にわたって制作されたこのシリーズの中の一点。

100円ショップでも手に入りそうなキッチュでカラフルな造花やおもちゃの兵隊、機械部品や変形した金属板などが山積みにされ、土台のフレームからいまにも雪崩れ落ちそうにひしめき合っている。

小振りなサイズながらも、テロの破壊的威力と、それによって引き起こされた混沌とした状況を凝縮したかのような作品だ。

1990年代以降、構造主義に傾倒し、ミニマリズムの作家として活動していたゲンツケンが、そうしたスタイルと決別し、独自の制作アプローチを模索し始めた転換点にあることがはっきりと見て取れる最初の作品でもある。
