Austrian artist Erwin Wurm is known for his humorous sculptures in which parts of the body — or the objects worn or held — suddenly bloat or twist, leaving the entire human silhouette grotesquely misshapen and absurd.

Whenever I encounter Wurm’s work, I always feel a kind of joyful surprise — as if someone had just told me a wildly funny joke, but with a perfectly serious, deadpan face — leaving me momentarily unsure whether to laugh or hesitate.

It’s that playful tension that makes seeing his work such a delight.
