Celebrated as a “magician of light,” German lighting designer Ingo Maurer created numerous works that far surpassed conventional commercial lighting — combining functionality with playful wit and free-spirited imagination.

Among his best-known pieces are Bulb, YaYaHo, and the winged Lucellino.

At the Pompidou Centre, this particular work was a delight to encounter: the movements of live goldfish in an aquarium were reflected by light onto a mirrored surface and aluminium plates on the wall, creating a trompe-l’œil effect.

The reflected imagery shifted and transformed endlessly depending on how the light struck it — a work full of playful spirit, a visual feast for the eyes.

自由な発想に基づき、機能性とウィットを兼ね備えた、従来のコマーシャルな照明デザインをはるかに超える優れた作品を数多く生み出してきた。

代表作には Bulb、YaYaHo、羽の生えた Lucellino などが知られている。

ポンピドゥー・センターで展示されていたこの作品は、水槽の中を泳ぐ金魚の動きが、光によって水面と壁に設置された鏡やアルミ板に反射し、トロンプ・ルイユ（Trompe-l’œil、だまし絵）的な効果を生み出す、遊び心にあふれたもの。

光線の当たり具合によって映し出されるオブジェのイメージが変幻自在に変わり続ける、その様子を楽しめる“目に美味しい”作品だった。
