“The Sound That Slept Beneath the Floorboards”
— every creak brings back something we forgot to listen for
Sound was sleeping beneath the floor, gathered like breath.
With each creak, the sound returns to me.

👣
Beneath each step,
the floor remembers —
a nightingale’s creak,
a wooden lung
that will not sleep.
Chionin, Kyoto. "Uguisubari"

Behind the glass,
ferns unfurl
with inaudible sighs.
The cat waits,
its whiskers trembling
to the silence of soil.

Anne Duk Hee Jordan (2022)

🎺
Above it all,
angels hold their breath.
Trumpets painted,
wings exhaling pigment,
a music trapped
between brush and air.
Tintoretto "Il Paradiso" (1588)
🫁
Everywhere,
something breathes in waiting —
beneath, within, above.
The world
is a house of lungs.
🫧 “Which sound might echo that slept the sound beneath floorboards?”
